Abdussalam Alawini

Email: alawini at seas.upenn.edu

I am a postdoctoral fellow at the Computer and Information Science (CIS) department, University of Pennsylvania. I recently joined the database group to work on two interesting data management projects: approximating and reasoning about scientific workflow provenance and data citation.

My research interests are broadly in the field of databases, with a focus on scientific data management. I am particularly interested in applying machine learning methods to various problems of modern data management systems: scientific workflow provenance, data citation and managing file-based datasets.

“I have had a Mr. Alawini in a number of my classes. In those classes Mr. Alawini worked in a team environment on a number of difficult issues: One, the “front-end” evaluation of the commercial potential of a PSU-developed diagnostic tool for Ovarian Cancer, and the other an evaluation of the potential for application of “Cloud Computing” in electronic personal health care records. In both cases, Mr. Alwini performed outstandingly, showing incite and dedication to pursuing the projects. I highly recommend Mr. Alawini as someone with capability and focus which will serve him well in his chosen profession.” June 9, 2011
